How to make Trash Bag Plarn

Plarn, in simple terms is Plastic Yarn where Pl stands for plastic and arn stands for Yarn.

Plarn can be used for making anything that a yarn artist can make out of it. Your imagination is your limit. The easiest way to recycle trash bags is to make plarn with it.

The plarn I have made is a Super Bulky weight plarn. You will need a 6.5mm – 7.5mm hook to crochet with it.

Here, I have showed you how to use this simple thing into plarn. I used this plarn to make a handbag and a clutch. I will be adding the links to the patterns soon.

Plastic!!! It can be harmful to the environment. However, I like to see the glass half full rather than half empty.

Plastic can also be reused for creating art and crafts. This project is my initiative into reuse of plastic.

I want to inspire others as well to use it for making useful things than just throwing it in the landfills. Let us all help the environment a little at a time.

I have used soft, thin plastic(polythene) trash bags for making this plarn.

Here are the steps to make it.:

Step 1:

Fold and flatten a trash bag. Cut the closed bottom end as shown in pictures using a scissor or a rotary cutter and a ruler.

Step 2:

Cut 1.25 inches strips using a rotary cutter and a ruler or a scissor.

Step 3:

Separate the folds of each strip. Open the loops and place them together for ease in making plarn with it.

Step 4:

Place 1st strip below the 2nd strip and join them with a knot as shown in the pictures. Please make sure not to bind the 2 ends tightly so the plarn will turn very thin. Just make a soft knot.

Step 4:

Join the remaining strips together like shown in the pictures below. It is easier to join strips together this way. Keep joining strips till you have a long enough plarn to crochet your intended project.
