Cowl Cobra’s Hood- The Inspiration

Categories :

This is the story of my cowl design named “Cobra’s Hood“. A few years ago, I made a lot of tops. I completed making some of these tops & some are still sitting in my unfinished objects (UFO) boxes. One such top has a unique crochet design named “Naagmani” in India.

Silk Top

Above is the top that I have yet to complete since, I think 2001 or maybe 2002. This design inspired me to create this cowl. If you love a cabled cowl & a lot of texture, this cowl design is just for you.

Cowl Cobras Hood

I love to experiment with different stitches and stitch patterns. I think, a new and interesting pattern is born when unique ideas and different stitches mix and match to create something totally out of the ordinary.

This cowl design is dedicated to the most mysterious and powerful animal on planet earth, The Cobra. If you look closely enough, this design looks like a cobra’s head with hood expanded as if it is ready to strike.

In Indian mythology, a cobra is wound around God Shiva’s neck so that he doesn’t swallow the poison that he drunk during the Manthan. God Vishnu sits on a seven headed cobra. There is even a festival celebrated in India called “Naag Panchmi”.

Apart from mythology, I’ve always been fascinated with this animal mainly due to the fact that I have had cobra in my dreams millions of time. So, subconsciously, I created a design that would fit around the neck just like Shiva.

This unique cowl design shows that there are various possibilities to using one single stitch or one single pattern into anything that you want it to become. I hope you enjoyed reading this story.
