How To Make Fabric With Thread Scraps

There is no power greater than the power of adversity. It empowers me, challenges me. While other people want things the easy way, it tickles my adventurous spirit. I am not afraid of adversities. I challenge it full on.

…..This is just a little piece of my philosophy related to this art fabric.

Fabric made with thread scraps

Here is my story about it…

For those of you who don’t know, I make sari yarn with art silk fabric. I have cut ribbons after ribbons of yarn till date. While I used to make it, a lot of thread strands used to fall out of it. I diligently collected as many as I could. Here is how it looked before I made the fabric.

Silk Thread Scraps

I sewed it all together and made a fabric. I saw a video once of a similar fabric where the person sandwiched the yarns in between 2 pieces of dis-solvable fabric. I searched for this fabric everywhere here in India. But I couldn’t find it.

I challenged myself to make it without the dis-solvable fabric. It is really possible to make fabric without it. It is just a bit difficult to make but not impossible.

The end result of this fabric is thick and thin. It does not have a stable thickness. But that is the beauty of handmade things, right? I had to be careful and make sure that it didn’t clog the feed of my sewing machine. But Yay! it is finally done. Here is how my beauty looks like.

Fabric made from scraps

To make it, just use small amount of threads at a time and start sewing on it like you would when you do patchwork. Then join the small pieces together by putting some more scrap threads over it and sewing around it.

You will need to sew it using the straight stitch. I tried using the zig-zag stitch. But it made the piece kind of pinched up instead of soft and fluffy.

Eventually, you will have an uneven piece. Cut the ends to make it into a square/ rectangle/ rounds/ oval or any other shape of fabric that you desire.

I am feeling totally accomplished after making it. I hope you enjoy it. Cheers!
